Frequently asked questions

Which poverty guidelines apply to 2027 health coverage?

The Marketplace uses the 2026 HHS guidelines for the 2027 tax credit, all year. Medicaid uses the guidelines current at the time you apply, so its dollar limits rise when HHS publishes new guidelines, usually in January.

What income counts for the federal poverty level?

Use your expected modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) for 2027: adjusted gross income plus untaxed Social Security, tax-exempt interest and excluded foreign income. Count everyone on your tax return, not just the people who need coverage.

Why does the same income give a different percentage in Alaska or Hawaii?

HHS sets higher guidelines there because costs are higher. For 2026, one person's guideline is $19,950 in Alaska and $18,360 in Hawaii.
